He announced his retirement in June 2021 after the Belgian 4x200m freestyle relay team failed to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "It was worth sacrificing everything for swimming for nine years, but now I'm putting an end to it. I am disappointed because participating in the Games has always been my main goal. I trained 25 hours a week for nine years but now I've decided to stop. I went to Pieter Timmers who helped me make the decision. His vision and opinion were important to me." (nieuwsblad.be, 08 Jun 2021)

He has studied financial modelling and project management in sport at the University of Stirling in Scotland. (Facebook profile, 06 Apr 2021)
