"Dad took me to the pool to watch his friend's son, who had been enrolled in a swimming club. I knew how to swim before because I had learned in the sea, where we often went to splash around and I always loved water. I did not feel a fully-fledged desire to become a swimmer at the time. That only came later."

At age 16 he considered quitting swimming but changed his mind as he wanted to attend a higher education institute. As a result, he entered Timiryazev Agricultural Academy in Moscow, Russian Federation to study forestry, while continuing his swimming training. "I realised that I needed to enter an institute, and a good athlete can do it easier." He also has a degree in coaching from the Moscow State Academy of Physical Education in Malakhovka, Russian Federation and, in 2020, he completed a master's degree in agronomy.
