SANCTION In April 2015 he was banned for four years by the International Swimming Federation [FINA] after anti-doping officials visited his home for an out-of-competition test and were denied entry by his wife. He appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS], who dismissed his appeal and upheld the sanction imposed by FINA. He was able to return to competition in April 2019. "I asked myself whether at 34 years old [in 2019] I wanted to return and if I could do it. I knew I didn't want to miss this opportunity. It is not an ordinary thing for someone to come back to sport after so long a break and at this age. But I can say now that when I am back in the swimming pool it feels good, extremely good. I am healthy and, most importantly, I have not lost motivation. It's a happy ending to this story."
