Why this sport?
His parents were physical education teachers who also taught swimming. He chose open water swimming because he preferred swimming in long distance events.

CANCER SCARE
In February 2015 he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. In August 2015 he had surgery to remove the cancer while still training at a light pace. He returned to competition in October 2015. "Swimming was what motivated me to overcome everything. I looked for in pain, at that weak moment, a motivation. I could demonstrate that it is possible to defeat it [cancer]. Being healthy is something unbelievable. I think that is motivating. I hope that what happened to me brings something good to people, that could inspire them.
