He took a break from the sport in 2016, before announcing his return to competitive open water swimming in November 2018. "After taking an indefinite break from the sport I love in 2016, this will be the first of many races to come on my journey back to make the Australian swim team in January [2019]. Over these past two years I have assessed my life and realised how much I have missed doing what I love, as well as realising I had left the sport with unfinished business."
