TRAGEDY She won a gold medal in her first event at the 2017 World University Games in Chinese Taipei. While competing in her second event she was informed that her brother Antonio had been hospitalised after falling from an elevated height. He would later die of his injuries. "I remember that I was leading my competition when my coach approached me and told me the news. She asked me if I wanted to continue competing. I knew I could win a medal but my pain was unbearable. Her parents wanted her to practise sports when she got to age eight. She took up diving in order to spend more time in the swimming pool due to the high temperatures in Veracruz, Mexico. She began considering competitive sport after taking part in her first national competition at age nine. "I was the only one of the team who did badly, so I wanted some type of rematch, and to compete more so I would know if I was good enough." |
