RETIREMENT
He retired from swimming in April 2018 after competing at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, QLD, Australia. "I'd done everything I wanted to do within the sport so it was just about enjoying the last moments, the last Games, and the last chance to represent Scotland. I'm still young, I'm only 25, but I think there's a lot more I can do. I'll still try and stay involved in the sport one way or another, but I'd also like to explore some other avenues and see where my talents can take me. I'm sure I'll miss it, I'll miss it a lot. You can't really replicate that feeling I had in that final [in Gold Coast] and to be a part of a team like this. Performance-wise I achieved way more than I ever wanted to do. SUSPENSION
In June 2017 he was banned from driving for a year after being found over twice the legal drink-drive limit. He was also suspended from swimming for three months by British Swimming and Scottish Swimming. "I recognise that I am in a position of influence and this type of behaviour is not acceptable in any way, shape or form. GLASGOW GOLD
He won a gold medal in the 400m individual medley at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, but had come close to being removed from the squad prior to the event. In May 2014 he was arrested in the United States of America for urinating on a police car, and suspended from the University of Florida swim team. "I was very close to not making the team. I got to the point in my life where I had to re-evaluate which path I wanted to take. I chose the right one, and it ended with a gold medal for me and Scotland. [Being arrested] was a wake up call.
