He was banned for two years between January 2019 and January 2021 after testing positive for the banned substance methylephedrine at the 2018 World Short Course Championships in Hangzhou, People's Republic of China. He appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS], claiming the substance entered his system through potentially contaminated rice balls that he ate the day before the test. The appeal was dismissed by CAS, who concluded that the athlete failed to establish a plausible source for the presence of the prohibited substance, and his original sanction was confirmed.
