His parents encouraged him to take up swimming. He began to focus on baseball in grade four of primary school, before giving up both sports. He later returned to swimming on the recommendation of a coach.

He places an emphasis on weight training in order to build muscle in his upper body, particularly his chest and shoulders. "Compared to foreign athletes, my build was slight. I couldn't beat them with that body. Therefore, I asked acquaintances of rugby players and American football players about their training regimes and applied their advice to my sessions."
