OVERCOMING SETBACKS
She considered quitting the sport after placing 40th at the 2015 National Championships in Japan. Subsequent medical examinations then revealed she had extreme anaemia, which she overcame through medication and dietary improvements. Her form improved dramatically, but in 2019 she revealed that she was feeling the pressure of expectations rising over her performances. "The [2015] experience was probably the turning point of my swimming career. I thought that I would never have to suffer like that again, but in 2019 I hit another wall. The problem was mental, and there was no clear solution. In that sense, I was struggling more than in 2015. Things don't always turn out the way you want them to, but I've been able to collect my thoughts over the past year or so. Thinking about why I compete or what I want to do in the future, and experiencing all these different thoughts and feelings has made me a more mature person."
