Why this sport?
His parents both played volleyball so he tried that sport, as well as football, but at age eight he decided he wanted to do something different. His younger sister was swimming, so he went along to training with her and the coaches noticed his potential. "The coaches who were responsible for the young children thought that I could swim really fast, but with poor technique."

STUDYING IN THE UNITED STATES
He moved to Western Kentucky University [WKU] in the United States of America in the 2013/14 academic year, and represented WKU for two seasons. In 2015/16 he moved to the University of Missouri, where he swam for two seasons before returning to Germany in 2017. In 2016 he became the first University of Missouri swimmer to win an NCAA title when he claimed victory in the 100 yard breaststroke. He also finished third in the 200 yard breaststroke the same year, to record the two highest finishes by a University of Missouri male swimmer in the programme's history. "They [Missouri] had an upcoming programme and had success with breaststroke swimmers. When I got there, I had fun swimming again, because you are a team. And training is like a competition. You can't hide, every day you have to give your best. And that leads to improvement." (rnf.de, 23 Nov 2019; Mizzou Made Student Athlete Book, 04 Feb 2018; Swimming World YouTube channel 26 Mar 2016; themaneater.com, 09 Sep 2015)

SWIMMING COUPLE
He has been in a long-term relationship with German swimmer Nadine Laemmler since about 2010. She also studied at Western Kentucky University between 2013 and 2015 before moving to the University of Missouri in 2015/16 with him. "At times it is a challenge being with another athlete. We want to have a life outside sport, but if one of us suggests we go out, then the other might say, 'I am too exhausted'. Of course, that can lead to some unhappiness. But at the same time, it also helps because the other person knows how you feel, as they have felt the same at times." (Sportlerherzen YouTube Channel, 14 Jul 2019)
