Sport Specific Information |
Why this sport? |
"My dad got me into swimming. I was originally a 1500m pool swimmer and, if I'm honest, it bored me a bit. Eight lanes, eight people against you, same temperature water, you turn up and you're indoors all day. It wasn't my cup of tea. Being introduced to open water swimming through the talent ID programme really opened my eyes to the tactics and a completely different dimension to the sport of swimming which I'd not experienced in the pool." |
When and where did you begin this sport? |
He began swimming at age three. He switched from the pool to open water swimming for the 2013 season. |
General Interest |
Injuries |
He sustained a fractured knee injury in late 2018. (britishswimming.org, 13 Feb 2020)
He sustained two broken ribs and a series of illnesses during the 2017/18 season. (bbc.co.uk, 16 Sep 2018; outdoorswimmer.com, 07 Aug 2018) |
Other sports |
He has represented Great Britain in swimming, and competed at the 2012 European Short Course Championships in Chartres, France. (zwemza.com, 10 Jul 2017; bleacherreport.com, 03 Aug 2016; SportsDeskOnline, 29 Oct 2020) |
Other information |
RETIREMENT He retired from competitive open water swimming in April 2021. He had been impacted by a shoulder injury and finished in 24th place at the 2021 World Cup in Doha, Qatar, a month earlier. "I want to do it on my terms. That race was a bit of an eye-opener and, although it wasn't the only reason, it did highlight that I'm not quite there physically or mentally right now. For some it's the love of the sport which keeps them going even when they're past their peak, but for me it's always been about winning and I need to do what makes me happy. I knew that physically Tokyo 2020 was pushing it for me, so when the Games were pushed back a year it was a big hurdle to get over. I've also had COVID and lots of time out of the water with my shoulder and I'm at a point where I'm proud of what I've achieved in my career, but I'm ready to move on." (bbc.co.uk, 06 Apr 2021)
OTHER ACTIVITIES He works as a performance and mindset coach, and has served as the head performance mindset coach for English football club Brentford. (huubdesign.com, 08 Apr 2020)
BUSINESSMAN He has a number of business ventures outside of competitive swimming, including a swimming kit supply business. "I started that pre-Rio [2016 Olympic Games] which is quite good, but I just couldn't sustain the time and energy doing that and training at the same time. I've got a couple of other ventures that are coming to fruition now, including an online training platform called Elevate which I'm quite excited about, I'm also working quite closely in the commercial side of football and that's something that I'd like to pursue post swimming career. There's all sorts of stuff going on outside of swimming which I need to keep me ticking over in the pool, I'd go stir crazy otherwise." (fina.org, 22 Jul 2019) |
