RIO REDEMPTION He won the 200m breaststroke final at the 2016 Australian Championships, which doubled as the national trials for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. However, his winning time of 2:09.90 missed Swimming Australia's qualifying time of 2:09.64 and he was not selected to compete at the Games in Rio de Janeiro. "[Missing the 2016 Olympic Games] was probably the best thing that could happen to me. It's made me more mentally resilient to my competitors. [In 2020] I want to prove to myself that I can perform on the Olympic stage." (Swimming NSW Facebook page, 13 Mar 2019)
BREASTSTROKE FOCUS He began focusing on breaststroke in 2016. "I started out as a medley swimmer. Coming into 2016 I started moving towards breaststroke as I thought it would be my best chance of making the Olympic team. So I knuckled down, started doing breaststroke, and I've stuck with it ever since." (Swimming NSW Facebook page, 13 Mar 2019) |
