HIATUS He took a break from the sport after failing to win a medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He returned to the pool in late September 2021. "I had no idea of quitting swimming. I got upset then, at the Olympics, which is basically normal. After the Olympics it was necessary to rest, spend time with benefit, and recover. And then the understanding came that I was ready to fight. I don't want to set concrete guidelines for myself. There is no such thing that I decided to swim until some time. I just want to enjoy the process, and then we'll see how it goes." (rsport.ria.ru, 02 Oct 2021)
DISTANCE PREFERENCE He competes in the breaststroke over both 100m and 200m but feels he better suited to the longer distance. "It seems to me that my body is more adapted to this distance [200m breaststroke]. Sprinters, after all, are more powerful, and I am taller and thinner, which is more suitable for 200m. But, in any case, I am good at 100m and I would like to progress at this distance. The 100m is a pure sprint, where you have to start quickly, pick up speed right away, not lose it, and add more speed at the finish line. The 100m is more tense, and the 200m is more intellectual. It's like a chess game. You need to be able to deconstruct this distance mathematically." (olympics.com, 14 Jan 2021) |
