TOKYO MEDALS He bought a Japanese flag when he competed at the 2017 World Cup event in Tokyo, Japan, and hung it on the bedroom door of his apartment in Amsterdam, Netherlands, to remind him of his ambition to compete at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He went on to win two silver medals at the 2020 Games. "On vacations I usually buy the flag of the country where we were. In 2017 I was in Tokyo for the World Cup. Every day in the bus from my hotel to the swimming pool I passed the construction site of the Olympic swimming stadium. I found that super cool and inspiring. Then I immediately bought the Japanese flag in a shop." (SportsDeskOnline, 01 Dec 2021; ad.nl, 04 Dec 2019)
FATHER'S SUPPORT His mother died of breast cancer at age 48 in 2011. He says he is grateful for his father's support following her passing. "He did a splendid job. It wasn't easy for him because in the beginning the four of us [him, his father and his two siblings] were all struggling to cope with the loss and the new life. I think my sister and I were further ahead of our father dealing with the loss and getting on with our lives. After a year, a year and a half, my father had a place for it and came down and his emotions went down and he was really supportive of us. Especially for me it has always been like, 'I won't push you into anything, just make your own choices. If you want to swim, you're going to swim; if you don't want to swim, I'm also fine. Do whatever you want, I am there supporting you, no matter what'. For me that was really like a liberation; it was really nice to have that support no matter what. No matter if I swim good or bad, he is always there and he is my biggest fan. For my dad to be so supportive but also really free was for me the best scenario." (swimmingworldmagazine.com, 21 Jul 2021)
BREAKTHROUGH SWIM He believes that the 2017 European Short Course Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, announced his arrival as a contender on the international scene. He helped the Dutch mixed 4x50m medley relay team win gold in Copenhagen. "I had never participated in a large tournament and came out of nowhere for many swimmers. Now they can no longer ignore me and I feel a lot of respect." (ad.nl, 04 Dec 2019; parool.nl, 20 Oct 2019) |
