He missed out on selection for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo after suffering whiplash and bruises to his neck and shoulders a day before the German trials. His mother Sabine Krauss [nee Herbst] competed for Germany in swimming at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games. His grandmother Eva Herbst and grandfather Jochen Herbst competed for East Germany in swimming at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. His father Karl-Heinz Klenz also competed in swimming at national level. His uncle Stefan Herbst competed in swimming for Germany at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games and won two world championship medals.
