Why this sport?
She suffered a cardiac arrest at age five and had allergic rhinitis [inflammation of the inside of the nose], so her parents encouraged her to take up the sport for health reasons. Her parents contacted the 'Nadar e Viver' [Swimming is Living] organisation in Friburgo, Brazil, where she began practising the sport. "Before that I wanted to be a dentist, but I kind of stood out in my group and the coach advised my parents to keep me enrolled in swimming because he saw big potential in me."

Sporting philosophy / motto
"Only through the difficulties you know to cherish every achievement obtained, but you have to be willing to take the risks, and not point the finger at God and claim you did not get where you wanted because of someone else. Cowards do that, and you are not a coward, you are much bigger than that." [US movie character Rocky Balboa] (cob.org.br, 21 Jul 2015)

THOUGHTS OF QUITTING
She considered quitting the sport after struggling with her mental health in 2016. "My career was going so fast and in 2016 I felt pressed by others, my parents, my club, my coach, and from myself. The following years I was not called to the national team for many criteria. In 2017 I only made the military national team and thought, 'I committed so much only to get this?' It was very difficult." She again considered leaving the sport when she was not included in the national team for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "I was in the pre-national team and I was training as if I were to go to Tokyo. I discovered at the last minute that I wouldn't go. The Brazilian Olympic Committee said they were considering me for [the 2024 Olympic Games in] Paris but it was difficult to accept after all the effort during the [COVID-19] pandemic, so much so that I didn't even watch the Games."
