TOKYO EXPERIENCE
He believes being an underdog in his Olympic debut at the 2020 Games in Tokyo enabled him to overcome his nerves. He ended up winning gold in the men's 200m breaststroke and bronze in the mixed 4x100m relay. "I was lucky enough to fly under the radar and not have as much media attention, be able to focus on myself and focus on what I needed to do to get the best out of myself. EDUCATION
He studies dual degrees in psychological science and business at Griffith University in Brisbane, QLD, Australia. "I'm doing it part-time but as much as I can with everything going on. I've deferred to take some time out as the roller coaster of emotion coming off the [2020 Olympic] Games, just getting myself reset. In the end of the day I'm only going to swim for another six years, maximal, maybe. So, 28, 29, that's when I kind of see myself transitioning out of the pool. BREASTSTROKER
He decided to focus on breaststroke after he finished high school. "There's an old saying that breaststrokers are born, not made. I've always swum breaststroke since I was nine, that was my first national school champs in Perth. I've always dabbled in IM, and actually I won a national medal in the fly race believe it or not. But, if you saw my butterfly now you'd probably question that. I swam all the strokes probably up until I finished high school.
