Sporting philosophy / motto |
"I think competitiveness is what drove me for so long to start becoming serious about the sport. What I ended up loving was the social connections you can make with other people. When you work as hard as swimmers do, you form bonds with other people that most non-athletes simply cannot understand." (teamunify.com, 03 Mar 2021) |

LATE DECISION ON COLLEGE He enjoyed football, as well as swimming, while he was in high school. A succession of ankle injuries then persuaded him that he would be better off pursuing swimming, although he had to work hard on his physique - gaining about 20 kilograms in bodyweight while at North Carolina State University - to make sure his times were quick enough to compete at an elite level. "When I was 16, I didn't even know if I wanted to swim in college. I was probably barely fast enough. It's kind of crazy to think where I've gotten."
