TOURNAMENT DISAPPOINTMENT
He was not selected for the US team ahead of the 2021 World Short Course Championships despite having set a short course world record in the 100m backstroke in August 2021. He voiced his disappointment at missing out on a place on the team on social media, stating that he believed USA Swimming should review its policy of how teams are selected. "Choosing a short course team from long course times is an outdated selection process that has worked in the past, and may continue to work due to the depth of our swimmers, but it leaves off some of the best swimmers America has to offer. USA Swimming has a history of only caring for their top-tier long course swimmers, and leaving multiple short course American record holders off the team has only solidified this in my opinion." (swimmingworldmagazine.com, 28 Oct 2021)

MISSING TOKYO
He reached the final of the 100m butterfly and the 100m freestyle at the 2021 US Olympic Trials but missed out on a spot on the team for Tokyo 2020 after placing fifth in butterfly and eighth in freestyle. "I gotta keep reminding myself if someone came up to me in high school and said, 'This is what your career is going to look like four or five years down the road', I would have taken that any day. So, just kind of like putting it in perspective of how far I've come and knowing that there's still a lot more to go. Even though I might be still getting second or third, and missing these times by the touch out, essentially, just knowing that the best is still yet to come." OTHER ACTIVITIES
He is known as a talented underwater swimmer, and he has set up the Fifth Stroke Swim Camp to help young swimmers improve their underwater kicking. "It kind of blew my mind that people were actually willing to pay to hear me talk. I had to step back and put it in perspective again. I'm actually giving back to a community that has given me so much. To be able to do that was just really rewarding." (yorkdispatch.com, 21 Jun 2021)
