Why this sport? |
She was advised to take up swimming by her doctor when she began experiencing symptoms of asthma. She was later introduced to open water swimming by coach Rogerio Arapiraca. "I began swimming in the pool. When I was younger I was so afraid of the sea. In [the Brazilian state of] Bahia it is a tradition to swim in open water but I always had a fear of not being able to see the bottom and of the wildlife. He [Arapiraca] introduced me to open water swimming. The first thing I did when I first went to train with him was to ask if I was obliged to swim in the sea. He said no, that everything will happen with time. It was a very slow process but very interesting because I began losing that fear little by little." |
