OLDEST MEDALLIST In 2019, at age 39, he became the oldest swimmer to win a medal in the pool at the world championships after finishing third in the 50m butterfly at the 2019 edition of the tournament in Gwangju, Republic Korea. He only competed in Gwangju after receiving an invitation from the International Swimming Federation [FINA]. "It's fantastic for me. I wouldn't even have come if it weren't for the invitation FINA gave me. I am satisfied getting another world championship medal at age 39. At my age I first have to decide in which event I can compete. I cannot swim the 50m and 100m butterfly, as well as the 50m freestyle, so I opted for only 50m butterfly, an event it's easier for me to swim and for which I have so much affection." Two years later, in 2021, he became the oldest swimmer to win a title at the world championships [long and short course] when he claimed gold in the 50m butterfly at the 2021 World Short Course Championships in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. "For me, it's such a challenge to be here at age 41. The others are pretty fast, but competing in a world championship final is such a pressure that it might have an effect. I did it a lot of times, so I didn't feel that pressure quite like the younger ones. So, this is awesome to win again." (fina.org, 07 Jan 2022; rededoesporte.gov.br, 22 Jul 2019)
TEAM MANAGER He is team manager for Brazilian professional swimming team Oxygen, which launched in 2021. (Oxygen Swimming Instagram profile, 06 Jan 2022; terra.com.br, 24 Nov 2021; swimswam.com, 21 Apr 2021)
