FROM BRAZIL TO ITALY VIA AUSTRALIA He was born in Brazil but moved with his family to Australia in 1988 at age three. His father went there to compete in the World Masters Swimming Championships and decided to move to Australia permanently. He grew up in Brisbane, QLD, and represented Australia at the Olympic Games in 2004 and 2008. After a year in Barcelona, Spain, in 2004 he relocated to Italy, the country of his great-grandparents. He took up Italian citizenship in 2009 and has since represented Italy in international competition. "I was convinced that I needed to represent Italy after the Beijing Games. I loved the team. I could feel the energy and synergy of the players even if I had not played with them. It was the country where I felt I could crown my aspirations."
