DELAYING RETIREMENT
She had considered retiring after the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro but decided that she wanted to compete at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo after injury affected her performance in Brazil. "I had arrived in Rio with some technical gaps aggravated by a microfracture to my thumb that forced me to compete stuffed with painkillers. I felt pain but, above all, a feeling of incredible helplessness and I decided I didn't want to end my career like that and I decided to start from scratch with the help of my new coach Domenico Rinaldi and the indispensable support of the Army Sports Centre. Thanks to that choice I was able to add another piece of sporting history to my life, and I am very happy about it." (sportfair.it, 12 Apr 2021)

COMPETING IN HER THIRTIES
She admits that still competing in her 30s inspires her to prove people wrong about the prospects of older athletes. "At 33 I will compete in my fourth Olympics [at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo] among teenagers and I feel that for years it has been an unequal struggle because, to get the same results as young people, you need to work 10 times as hard, but that's okay. I chose to carry on competing to enjoy the satisfaction of defeating the old athlete cliche that no longer holds up. I have proved to myself that anything you want to do in life can be achieved." (anygivensunday.it, 15 Jun 2020)
