Why this sport? |
She often got ill as a child so her mother took her to a swimming club to strengthen her physical condition. Her coach suggested she take up open water swimming to improve her freestyle skills. "It was always my dream to compete at the Olympic Games. I was encouraged to take up the sport many times, but I was not ready. However, after open water swimming was included on the programme for the Olympic Games in 2008, I wanted to try the sport." |

She became the first open water swimmer representing Japan to compete at the Olympic Games when she placed 12th in the 10km event at the 2012 Games in London. She also became the first open water swimmer representing Japan to compete at two editions of the Olympic Games when she again placed 12th in the 10km event at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
