RETIREMENT He announced his retirement from competitive swimming in January 2017. He had made the decision following the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. "I haven't been in the water since Rio, so this has been true for a while, but now I am saying it out loud and I am admitting it to myself. I am retiring. I am done swimming. This was a hard decision to make. I have defined myself as a swimmer since I was five years old, but it comes down to this: I don't want it any more." (olympics.nbcsports.com, 11 Jan 2017)
LATE OLYMPIC BLOOMER His appearance at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro [where he won bronze in the 100m backstroke], at age 30, made him the oldest first-time US Olympic swimmer to compete at the Games since St. Louis in 1904.
