She retired from competitive swimming in January 2019. "It is with the same uncertain steps but with the same will, the same courage and the same indomitable determination that I started my swimming career at the time and focused my efforts on achieving my dreams that today I announce that I am stopping my career as a professional swimmer." MOTIVATION
She says she is not motivated by her times while swimming but would prefer to reach technical perfection in her stroke. "The world record [in 2013] has built an illusion in my environment about how I should be and it was as an unrealistic illusion. Swimming became meaningless and I felt really demotivated because everything was about times and hundredths of seconds. I'd rather be remembered for having perfect technique than for having set a world record. Times are beaten. In a few years they will probably swim faster than we do today. But I think that if they talk about there was once one who looked like a dolphin in the water, I may have made my mark and I may have made a difference." (hellehein.dk, 13 Aug 2018)
