Santiago placed seventh in the 25km open water event at the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russian Federation. Juan Fernando has also coached at national level in Ecuador. Xavier served as the Minister of Sports in Ecuador between 2015 and 2017. Ivan won gold in the 5km open water event at the 2016 South American Championships in Asuncion, Paraguay. BREAK AND RETURN
He took a break from competition after the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. "I had spent almost eight years training hard so I decided to take a break to regain strength and enthusiasm in order to continue representing Ecuador in international competitions." He also sustained a left shoulder injury that kept him from swimming. He returned to competition in late 2017 at an event in Brazil after a 14-month break from the sport.
