BREAK AND RETURN He took a break from competition after the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. "I had spent almost eight years training hard so I decided to take a break to regain strength and enthusiasm in order to continue representing Ecuador in international competitions." He also sustained a left shoulder injury that kept him from swimming. He returned to competition in late 2017 at an event in Brazil after a 14-month break from the sport.
