His cousin Ivan and his brother Esteban have both represented Ecuador in open water swimming. Esteban won gold in the 10km event at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, while Ivan competed at the Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016. His eldest brother Juan Fernando competed in swimming, and became a coach. His other brother Xavier served as the Minister of Sports in Ecuador between 2015 and 2017, and then as governor of Azuay province in Ecuador from 2017 until 2019.
