Why this sport? |
He took up swimming after his siblings and friends started lessons. He enjoys the sport because there is always room for improvement. "There is no better feeling than to go a best time. Plus, my parents were adamant that me and my siblings took a water safety course as kids to learn to swim." |

When and where did you begin this sport? |
He began swimming at age two and entered his first competition at age five. He has flat feet, which affected the type of sports he was able to participate in as a youngster. "Unfortunately for me, whenever I had to do land sports I wasn't that good, I wasn't that efficient at running. And for jumping, it's kind of the same thing - I had to transfer a lot of energy. So, as far as swimming was concerned, it chose me." |

Sporting philosophy / motto |
"I like the idea of 'stronger together', and in swimming there is that interesting paradigm of it being thought of as this individual sport. But there is nothing that gets you through a tough training day like having a teammate there to go through it together with. And you're racing them. And maybe while you're racing them, you don't have such nice thoughts about them. You want to beat them. You want to make them regret the day they even thought they could compete against you. But when we get out of the water I want to give him a hug." (olympics.com, 25 Jul 2020) |

CANCER DIAGNOSIS In January 2019 he announced that he had been diagnosed with testicular cancer. He underwent two operations, and in May 2019 he announced that he had recovered and was returning to competition. He spent two weeks out of the pool after his surgery, and said it was probably his longest break from swimming since he was age five. "I'm very grateful to be racing. It beats the heck out of being home, waiting for test results, waiting for another surgery." (omaha.com, 16 Jun 2021; olympics.nbcsports.com, 11 Apr 2021; olympicchannel.com, 21 Jul 2019; mundodeportivo.com, 14 May 2019; olympics.nbcsports.com, 24 Jan 2019)
SURGERY RECOVERY Following the operations he underwent for testicular cancer in 2019, he had to retrain a number of skills in the pool. "In some ways, I'm kind of relearning how to swim. I have five locations in my abdomen where doctors had to cut through muscle, fascia, all that stuff. My coordination is awful. My muscle firing patterns are not where they need to be. The connectivity from my kick to my arms isn't where it needs to be. That was a major asset for me before this, and now I have to work to get it back. From the outside, I might look largely the same, but it feels very, very different. Turns, trying to be explosive, that's definitely where it took away the most. You develop all sorts of weird compensation patterns. Now I have to be much more cognisant about each and every movement to relearn it, which is almost like an opportunity." (FINA World Aquatics Magazine, 02 May 2019)
OTHER ACTIVITIES In 2019 he and fellow swimmer Will Copeland purchased the AC Swim Club in San Rafael, CA, United States of America. "In the 2018/2019, winter, during the cancer issue, basically Will had been looking around, and said, 'Look at this, there's an opportunity here. I jumped at it because certainly staying in the world of swimming was something that I knew I wanted to do. But with something like investing and buying a plot of land with a pool on it, that's not something that's ever going to come with perfect timing. So, you just got to make it work, make it happen."
