INTERNATIONAL RETIREMENT In June 2019 she announced her retirement from international water polo after she was not selected for the Spanish national squad for the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, Republic of Korea. She continued to play at club level. "I leave happy in the knowledge that I gave my best in every match and training session, but sad that I will no longer share the day-to-day moments with my teammates, who are like family to me. At the same time I'm happy to have enjoyed so many good moments, and I'm excited about what's to come. I have been renewing my contract [at CN Sabadell] season after season for a couple of years now [speaking in 2021]. I don't know how long I'll be there as I am no longer 20-year-old Mati. I have other projects besides water polo." (diaridesabadell.com, 01 Jul 2019; Instagram profile, 29 Jun 2019; isabadell.cat, 16 Aug 2021)
