DIABETIC
She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2014. She aspires to be a role model for diabetics and continue to compete. "I started off this year saying that I was going to stop swimming, 'I cannot do this, I am tired all the time, I cannot have something else wrong with me'. I kept thinking about it, especially about one thing that my aunt, Anne Jardin, who won two bronze medals at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, told me. She was on the team to go to the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow when Canada boycotted [because of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan]. She told me she regretted not going for another four years. That was what was in the back of my mind, 'I have to do this for me and I have to do this for other people who believe in me'. I want to inspire people. I don't want them to look at me and say 'she kind of gave up'." (swimming.ca, 03 Jul 2015; Twitter profile, 27 Jan 2016)

EARLY DAYS
She failed her first year of swimming lessons because she did not want to dive into the pool and touch the bottom, one of the requirements to pass the course. "I just couldn't do it. I was afraid I was going to drown." (canada.com, 26 May 2006)
