CHASING NUMBERS He says he becomes fixated on his times and that he has an extensive memory of precise results. "It's my obsession. I like statistics, numbers, probabilities. I am very connected to that, and I spend too much time thinking about it. Today I can remember most of my best training sessions in the last 10 years. My coach Monica has them written down, and whenever she comes to ask me about a race I swam in 2016, I know what my time was. I like numbers but at a certain point they become a burden, because this sport is defined by hundredths of a second." (enganche.com.ar, 01 May 2020)
CONNECTION WITH COACH His coach Monica Gherardi is a friend of his mother and was at the hospital when he was born. Gherardi has coached him since he took up the sport as a child. After the 2012 Olympic Games in London, he was offered the opportunity to train in Spain under French coach Fred Vergnoux, but after nine months there he decided to return to Argentina. "In Spain, I had better facilities but that doesn't help you to improve if you don't have the support of your family and friends. Besides, Monica cares about my well-being. She knows what to do when I'm burned out, and I can't find that with another coach." (sinmordaza.com, 24 Jan 2016; elgrafico.com.ar, 14 Nov 2015; nataccion.com, 18 Nov 2015) |
