OVERCOMING EARLY STRUGGLES He has said that he fought depression after failing to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing due to a knee injury. After not qualifying for the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, and the 2012 Olympic Games in London, he then moved from Guadalajara to Mexico City to start training with Chinese coach Ma Jin. "It was a radical change. In Guadalajara I did so much gym training but coach Ma Jin made me improve my technique. In the end, both ways of training helped me to become one of the best divers in the country." (elfinanciero.com.mx, 19 Sep 2017)
DIET He does not eat meat or other animal-derived foods. He became a vegetarian at age 15 but then decided to consume a diet based mainly on vegetables. "The results of a diet full of vegetables are very good because I keep the strength in my body and I have lowered fat. The goal is to become a perfect machine that can execute dives at a higher level. I consider nutrition as the most important thing in order to have a good performance." (qsnoticias.mx, 20 Dec 2019; Men's Health, 22 Sep 2019)
FURTHER EDUCATION He has studied for a master's degree in fashion design and marketing at Anahuac University in Mexico City. "One of the athletes that inspired me was [English footballer] David Beckham. He made a difference on and off the field. He was one of the first athletes who became a fashion icon. I liked that mix of athlete and fashion from the first time I saw it." (Expansion YouTube channel, 03 May 2021; tabascohoy.com, 08 Nov 2016) |

(olimpicos.marcaclaro.com, 05 Jan 2022; tvazteca.com, 14 Dec 2021; marca.com, 14 Nov 2021; diariobasta.com, 18 Sep 2018)
A back injury ruled him out of contention for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. (olimpicos.marcaclaro.com, 05 Jan 2022)
An injury to his right knee prevented him from taking part in the Mexican selection event for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. (elfinanciero.com.mx, 19 Sep 2017)

Why this sport? |
His mother was advised to enrol him in diving at a swimming school in Mexico City, Mexico. He did not like it in the beginning but later became hooked. "I always liked the extreme activities and the adrenaline. I never was scared of diving from the platform. I enjoy the thrill. I love trying new dives and techniques." |
