RETIREMENT In November 2016 she retired from competitive swimming. She works at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI, United States of America, as a clinical athletic counsellor and coordinator for the university's mental health programme for student-athletes. "I was fortunate to have a swimming career that lasted 24 years while reaching true heights in the sport. Not only have I been successful in the sport, but I also have a passion for passing along lessons and experiences to the next generation." (fitterandfaster.com, 01 Jan 2020; usaswimming.org, 18 Jan 2018; LinkedIn profile, 01 Jan 2019)
FURTHER EDUCATION After completing a bachelor's degree in psychology at the University of Michigan, she studied for a master's degree in interpersonal and mental health at the same institution from 2014 to 2016. (LinkedIn profile, 01 Jan 2019)
SANCTION In 2009 she received a six-month suspension, backdated to September 2008, from the American Arbitration Association [AAA] after she tested positive for a prohibited diuretic in an out-of-competition United States Anti-Doping Agency [USADA] test. She claimed to have ingested the diuretic when she took medication that she believed to be a laxative, and the AAA took her defence into account when imposing the suspension. As a result she redshirted the 2008/09 US collegiate season, and she was eligible to return to competition from 25 March 2009.
