ABSENCE FROM THE POOL
He spent five months away from the pool due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation in Brazil: "I have stood still a long period, without going to the pool. When I was able to return to my practise in the water, it was a weird feeling because I was several months without the contact with the water. For us, athletes, it turns into a strange activity. But I believe I was able to readapt very quickly. With only two, three training sessions I could feel better again. It was the longest period I have stayed without swimming, in my career. The longest was three weeks after the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, and this time was almost five months." (surtoolimpico.com.br, 26 Sep 2020)

FIGHT AGAINST CANCER
In October 2019 he joined fellow Brazilian swimmer Etiene Medeiros in her social project named 'Touca Rosa' [Pink Cap] which aims to raise funds for the fight against women's breast cancer. He joined with the initiative 'Touca Azul' [Blue Cap] aimed to raise funds against men's prostate cancer. "Doing this campaign is for me being able to help those people in need. I had a case in my family, when my mother had breast cancer and I wanted to help in any way. I hope that with my media exposure I can help. It's something that motivates me and it's also very rewarding." (maquinadoesporte.uol.com.br, 03 Oct 2019)

SANCTION
In February 2015 he was suspended for six months by the International Swimming Federation [FINA] after testing positive for a banned diuretic while competing at the 2014 World Short Course Championships in Doha, Qatar. The ban was in place from December 2014 to June 2015. (swimmingworldmagazine.com, 27 Feb 2015)

Sport Specific Information
Why this sport?
He originally tried football as a child but did not get selected for the team. He was considering which sport to pursue until he had a swim in a pool on a hot day and decided on swimming. "I learn to swim in just three months, then I got into the intermediate team [of Club Aest] and finally in the top team. Everything just happened naturally, without thinking about results. It was pure fun."
