RETIREMENT AND COMEBACK
She announced her retirement from water polo in August 2021 following the postponed 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "I choose now because I am very satisfied with what I have done, but also because, at least for now, I have had enough. Despite the satisfaction it seems to me that to continue playing would be to force myself to prolong a stage of my life that I already want to close, there are so many other things I want to do." She returned to competition in December 2021 when she signed for Spanish second-tier club CN Echeyde Tenerife. "I am very motivated to return to play with this project, in which I have great friends, and in which I hope to contribute myself and my experience to the younger players. If I have learned something in the last few years of my career, it is to adapt to any situation and provide the team with whatever it needs. I come to help. If I have to shoot I will shoot, if I have to defend I will defend, if I have to swim against it, I will do it." HIATUS
She took a break from the sport in 2017 and 2018, after she found she was putting herself under increased pressure to perform well. "Everything changed in my mind and my style of play. Winning and playing well was not enough anymore. I was being compared with top stars of other sports, so I had to be the best. If I played well I could have always done it better. Even getting into the water made me feel bad. In January 2017 I stopped playing for medical reasons. I was burned out. I needed a break, and it was the best decision of my life. In the end [mental health] is like a broken leg, only that you cannot see it." Following her break, she spent time playing in Australia before returning to the Spanish national team for the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju, Republic of Korea. "Coming back to the national team has been great. I have never had so much fun. The most significant aspect of these world championships is that I've enjoyed playing water polo again."
