CULTURE ALLEGATIONS She has criticised Swimming Australia as having a "misogynistic" culture. In 2021 her social media posts and comments about the organisation led to the formation of an independent panel to investigate her concerns. She opted out of the Australian trials for the 2020 Olympic Games during this period. "It was disappointing to miss out on an opportunity like that [Olympic trials] but the potential rewards absolutely outweighs the risk. If this independent panel can have some meaningful outcomes that make the sport safer and more enjoyable for all stakeholders, not just women and girls, that is more valuable than an Olympic medal." (swimswam.com, 03 Sep 2021)
CONDITION In 2017 she was diagnosed with endometriosis, a condition where tissue similar to the lining on the inside of the uterus or womb grows outside of the uterus or womb. She had surgery immediately after diagnosis, and required further operations in 2018 and 2020. She has been an ambassador for QENDO, which supports people affected by the condition in Queensland, Australia. "I literally thought my appendix was exploding. My mum booked me in to see an endometriosis specialist the next day [after diagnosis], and I had surgery that evening. I also found out I had quite developed adenomyosis and was told I wouldn't be able to get pregnant if I tried, at that stage. I went on all of this medication, and this was about three months before the [2018] Commonwealth Games trials. The pain of adenomyosis actually feels like you are being stabbed in the uterus and someone is very slowly twisting that knife." (Twitter profile, 11 May 2021; insidethegames.biz, 27 Apr 2020)
BREAK She quit the sport for about 18 months beginning in 2011 before returning following encouragement from coach Michael Bohl. "I just felt so incredibly burnt out and overwhelmed and just discouraged by the sport that it just wasn't something that I wanted to do anymore. I was making junior Australian teams and winning at Australian age national championships. But I was really left still feeling empty and really suicidal because my whole world was swimming. It was something that I did every single day. I was made to feel like every decision I made, whether I was at the pool or not, was going to have a bearing on whether I was ever going to be successful in life. And that sort of pressure, of course, is going to be overwhelming to a developing person. It certainly wasn't an option to just train less." Injuries |
A shoulder problem affected her performances in September 2015. (couriermail.com.au, 29 Jul 2015)
She suffered neck and shoulder pain in 2014 that was later diagnosed as clenched jaw. The problem was resolved by an orthodontist. (olympics.com.au, 14 Apr 2016) |
