RETIREMENT AND COMEBACK Following the 2012 Olympic Games in London, she suffered from a lack of motivation, and retired from the sport in 2013. She returned again in 2015, however - after going back to school in between - with the aim of competing at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. "A lot of us really struggled that year [2012] from a mental health point of view, with not really knowing what was coming next, and that transition was really difficult. A few of us left after the world championships in 2013, and I wanted to leave, I guess, because I got a bit caught up with what my friends were doing. I'd gone back to school the year after the Olympics to do my A-Levels, which was really hard with all my friends having left to go to university, so I found that really difficult as well. It was worth it to make sure I could finish my A-Levels, and I'm really grateful that I made that decision now looking back on it. I always wanted to get back in [the pool] and do synchro again. Even though it was hard, it felt like the right decision." She retired from the sport for a second time in 2017. (britishswimming.org, 17 Feb 2021; bbc.co.uk, 21 Mar 2016; teamgb.com, 01 Jun 2016) |
