An injury to his left shoulder ruled him out of the 2017 European Short Course Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark. He experienced pain again in the same shoulder during the 2018 National Championships in Riccione, Italy, and was forced to withdraw from the competition. FOCUS ON SHORTER DISTANCE
He won bronze in the 1500m freestyle at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, but he announced in May 2021 that he did not plan to compete in the event at the 2020 Games in Tokyo and would be focusing on shorter distances.
