Why this sport? |
He was inspired to pursue swimming after watching US swimmer Michael Phelps win eight gold medals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. He had initially learned to swim for safety reasons. "I went on vacation to North Carolina with my family. My mother was always afraid I would drown. I was always so excited watching the fishermen bring in their catch, and was just always close to the water. I learned to swim shortly after that." |

SUSPENSION In September 2016 he was banned from the sport for four months by USA Swimming and the United States Olympic Committee [USOC] for breaching both organisations' code of conduct at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. He and teammates Jimmy Feigen, Ryan Lochte and Joseph Bentz were filmed on closed-circuit television [CCTV] vandalising a petrol station in the city during a night out. Feigen and Bentz also received four-month bans but Lochte was suspended for 10 months after initially falsely claiming the quartet had been robbed at gunpoint. (bbc.com, 08 Sep 2016, 21 Aug 2016) |
