RETIREMENT
In April 2020 he announced his retirement from competitive swimming due to a heart condition. He was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy in December 2019, three months after an anomaly with his heart was first detected during a routine medical examination ahead of the 2019 Mediterranean Beach Games in Patras, Greece. "I suffer from a dilated cardiomyopathy, which is not worrying for regular people but too risky for athletes. I never had any symptoms, maybe that medical visit in August [2019] saved me from worse trouble in the future." (ilcittadino.it, 06 Apr 2020) |
