Despite having a strong rivalry with German teammate Florian Wellbrock, the two are close friends and train together. "Florian and I have learned a lot from Thomas Lurz and also from Angela Maurer. In the end, it's about experience and hard work. I currently rate him [Wellbrock] as one of the strongest long-distance swimmers, it is definitely an advantage to have him as a training partner. I change things because I see that it works for him. You should know your competitors. I know him very well."
